Everything You Need To Know About Lip Filler
Your guide to lip augmentation in Kelowna and Kamloops with a Naturopathic Doctor.

As with any cosmetic procedure, it’s normal to have questions—a lot of questions. Lip filler is no different. In this full guide, I’ll break down all the most common questions I get asked during lip augmentation consultations as a practicing Naturopathic Doctor and cosmetic injector in Kamloops and Kelowna, BC.
What is lip filler?
Lip filler is used for lip augmentation, a cosmetic procedure used to add shape, volume and structure to the lips. There are several types of lip filler formulas on the market today, but the most common are hyaluronic acid based. This naturally occurring substance is known for its natural looking results.
Should I get a lip flip or lip filler?
In your research (or scrolling), you may have heard of the term lip flip, which differs from lip filler. Lip filler is when a hyaluronic acid dermal filler is injected into the lips to volume, add symmetry and define shape. Lip filler typically lasts three to six months. A lip flip, on the other hand, does not add any volume to the lips. Instad, lip flips use neuromodulators (commonly referred to as botox) to relax the muscles above the top lip (Orbicularis oris) to cause the lip to “flip” outwards. This causes the lip to appear fuller without actually adding volume. There is no “right” answer for which is better: lip flip or lip filler. Lip flips typically last three months. The best treatment for you depends on your natural lip, desired results and where you are in your treatment journey. The best way to determine if you should get a lip flip or lip filler is by booking a consultation.
Should I get a half or full syringe of lip filler?
I typically recommend those trying lip filler for the first time start with just a half syringe (0.5ml) before opting for a full syringe (1ml). By starting with a half syringe, we are able to better gauge how your body will respond to the filler and build up the vermilion border to reduce the risk of filler migration. By slowly adding filler, we are able to control the overall shape and structure more. More filler can always be easily added in follow-up appointments, but dissolving filler after overfilling is slightly more complicated. That being said, the best way for me to gauge what amount of filler would be best suited for your needs is through a complimentary lip filler consultation at one of my Kelowna or Kamloops locations.
What does “building lip filler” mean?
As previously mentioned, the best way to achieve fuller lips that still appear natural is by building lip filler overtime. Lip filler typically lasts between three to six months so by staggering your touch-ups we are able to gradually build volume while maintaining structure. This means, to build up your lip to your desired appearance, it may take a few treatments.
In my experience, building the lips' volume slowly with half syringes yields for the most natural looking shape and better reduces the risk of filler migration (if you haven't heard of this term, think "duck lips"). This patient transformation happened over a series of treatments starting with a half syringe of Revanesse® Ultra™+. As you can see the structure and shape of this patient’s lips is well maintained and the product is sitting well within the vermilion border.

Does lip filler hurt?
Lip filler treatments cannot be described as comfortable, but are very tolerable. Most patients describe the sensation as “pinching” which can be managed using a topical numbing cream. I personally offer my patients BTL numbing cream which has a quick onset and lasts 30 to 60 minutes. If you are concerned with your pain tolerance or are nervous for the treatment, please let me know during your consultation. There are several things we can do to ensure you feel comfortable in my chair:
Request a stress ball to hold on throughout your treatment as a welcomed distraction.
Come up with a plan for breaks. Let’s talk before we begin your injections about how many pokes before you need a rest. And if you feel good to keep going, we can skip the break and keep going.
While most patients are treated lying down, if you are prone to fainting, we can also elevate your legs to just above hip level. This will help regulate blood flow and get circulation to the brain and vital organs (making it harder to faint).
Let’s listen to some music or your favourite TV show to help distract you.
Don’t rush standing up, I have ice packs ready to help ease any discomfort and give you a minute to slowly sit up.
Juice boxes, sugary drinks or a snacks are always a good idea immediately following your treatment.
Hydrate well the rest of the day (well, and always).
How long does lip filler last?
Hyaluronic Acid lip filler typically lasts three to six months, with some individuals enjoying results for much longer. That being said, a variety of factors can contribute to the longevity of filler: metabolism, stress levels (inflammation), sun exposure and nutrition.
Lip Filler in Kelowna and Kamloops | Before and After Photos
Lip augmentation remains at the top of my list for favourite cosmetic procedures to perform due to their uniqueness. Each individual’s lips are to them and with proper lip augmentation technique, we can maintain that uniqueness while addressing individual concerns. Here are just some of the beautiful patient lip filler transformations from the last few weeks.
For this first-time lip filler patient, we started with just a half syringe of Revanesse® Kiss to help protect the vermilion border and then will do another half syringe after four to six weeks.

This patient wanted a little more volume in her upper lip, which naturally tends to be thinner. I am often asked if you can treat JUST the top lip and the answer is yes. Sometimes that is all that is needed to create beautiful balance.

What can I expect at my first lip filler treatment?
Every treatment with me starts the same—with a built-in consultation. These first few minutes of your appointment will allow us to truly get on the same page. During this time, you’re able to share your specific concerns, ask questions and learn about your options for the treatment area. If you’re uncomfortable moving ahead with the recommended treatment, that is okay! I will never pressure you into a treatment you aren’t fully comfortable and confident with.
Once a treatment plan has been agreed upon, I will start by cleaning the treatment area, marking the injections sites and applying the topical numbing cream (if needed). The actual injection process will vary in length depending on the treatment area and amount of product needed. You can typically expect this portion of your visit to only last five to fifteen minutes.
Prior to leaving my office, we will review your post care instructions and speak about next steps (if applicable). If you have any questions or are nervous about the process, always feel free to DM or email me and I’d be happy to chat.
Is any downtime associated with lip filler?
While lip filler is typically considered a “lunchtime” treatment, you should expect a quieter schedule for approximately 24 hours. Swelling, bruising and tenderness at the injection sites is common and should subside after 24 to 48 hours. You will also need to avoid drinking from a straw for at least 24 hours and follow your post care instructions, which I’ll provide at the time of your treatment, very carefully.
Who should NOT get lip filler?
Lip filler is not for everyone and that’s okay!! If any of the following apply to you, please postpone your lip filler treatment with me:
If you are pregnant of breastfeeding
If you intend to be on an airplane in the next week
If you have an active cold sore (lip filler specific)
If you have dental work scheduled within the next two weeks
If you have any big events (such as a wedding) booked within the next two weeks
If you plan to be physically active in the next 48 hours
If you’ll be in the the direct sunlight in the upcoming week (sun exposure can cause bruising of the injection site)
If you don’t need it (if you truly don’t need botox or filler, I will be honest with you and turn you away)
How should I prepare for my lip filler treatment?
When it comes to lip filler, pre-care instructions are just as important as your postcare. A week before your lip filler appointment, avoid blood thinning over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, Motrin, ibuprofen, and Aleve. To reduce your risk of bruising, it’s also recommended to avoid supplements such as primrose oil, garlic, ginseng, and Vitamin E. Two days before your appointment, I recommend pausing the use of topical products such as Retinol and Retinoids. Twenty-four hours before your treatment, avoid waxing the lip area and do not consume alcohol.
Is there bruising with lip filler?
By following the pre-care instructions mentioned above, you can reduce your risk of bruising, a common side effect of lip filler injections. That being said, if you are particularly concerned or prone to bruising you may want to consider taking Arnica or eating fresh pineapple for its bromelain, which may reduce bruising.
What should I look for in a cosmetic injector?
With over 10 years of injecting experience, my goal is to always provide the information my patients need to make educated decisions. Whether you are looking to book cosmetic injections in the Kamloops or Kelowna area or booking somewhere across the continent, beware of these cosmetic injector red flags when booking lip filler.
